Specification guide

A good comparison starts with your whole system. Choose compatible components, then compare the documented operating limits for the exact variant. These general notes explain what to look for; the product’s own manual and installation requirements always take precedence.

Battery basics

Match the battery’s nominal voltage and operating voltage range to your inverter and chargers. A 12 V, 24 V or 48 V label describes a system family; it does not mean the voltage stays fixed during charging and use. Check the permitted series and parallel arrangements for the exact battery.

Read the cell or battery pack’s continuous discharge limit alongside the BMS continuous current rating. The BMS is a protection system, and its rating alone does not establish the battery’s usable continuous output. Compare maximum and recommended charge current separately. Any peak-current figure needs a permitted duration and operating conditions.

Check the allowed charging temperature range, low-temperature charging protection and any heating requirements. A discharge temperature range is not automatically a charging range. Record where each figure came from and whether it is supplier-stated or independently tested. Example manufacturer battery guidance.

Inverter essentials

Check the DC input range, AC output voltage and frequency, continuous output power and supported waveform. Starting loads can differ from running loads, so a surge rating is useful only with its duration and conditions.

Idle consumption, expressed in watts, is the power used while the inverter is on without supplying a load. Compare this with any separate standby or ECO-mode behaviour. Maximum efficiency is a best-case figure: look for efficiency data at your expected load and stated input voltage, alongside temperature-related power limits. Example inverter specification format.

DC–DC charging

Check the input voltage range and the output voltage, current and charging profile separately. A regulated DC–DC power supply is not automatically a battery charger. Confirm that the chosen mode and settings match your battery chemistry and documented charging limits.

For vehicle charging, confirm conventional or smart-alternator compatibility, engine-running detection, input-current limiting and any required control connection. The charger’s output-current rating alone does not establish alternator compatibility. Also check isolation requirements, installation clearances and temperature derating in the specific manual.
